The WTA 250 UniCredit Iași Open completed its quarterfinal lineup on Thursday, with all four seeded players competing on Centre Court securing their places among the tournament's final eight.
Mayar Sherif and Oleksandra Oliynykova win in straight sets
In the opening match on Centre Court, Egypt's Mayar Sherif, ranked No. 97 in the WTA rankings, defeated Spain's Kaitlin Quevedo, world No. 100, 6-3, 7-6(2).
Sherif will face ninth seed Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan, currently ranked No. 82 in the world, in the quarterfinals.
Third seed Oleksandra Oliynykova of Ukraine also booked her place in the last eight with a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory over qualifier Elena Pridankina, who had eliminated Miriam Bulgaru in the opening round.
Oliynykova will next take on France's Clara Burel, a wild card entry, in the quarterfinals.
Paula Badosa produces remarkable comeback
In the most anticipated match of the day, Spain's Paula Badosa, former world No. 2 and the fans' favourite at Ciric Sports Base, needed three sets to overcome qualifier Alevtina Ibragimova.
The 28-year-old Spaniard, currently ranked No. 115 in the world, claimed a hard-fought 7-6(5), 1-6, 6-4 victory after producing a remarkable comeback from 1-4 down in the deciding set.
In the quarterfinals, Badosa, the most accomplished player to have competed across all five editions of the UniCredit Iași Open, will face fifth seed Panna Udvardy of Hungary.
Udvardy, ranked No. 71 in the world, advanced after defeating Poland's Katarzyna Kawa 1-6, 7-5, 6-2.
The four quarterfinal matches at the UniCredit Iași Open are scheduled for Friday, starting at 1:00 PM.
