DAY 1 - ATP CHALLENGER 100 - CONCORD IASI OPEN
Nicholas David Ionel produces the surprise and goes to round 2 at Concord Iași Open
On Monday morning, starting at 11.00, at the Ciric Sports Base, the first three games of the 2nd round of qualifications at the Concord Iași Open were played. Unfortunately, all three Romanian athletes present on the field were defeated. On "Central", Sebastian Gima lost to the Brazilian Matheus Pucinelli de Almeida, score 2-6, 4-6, also in two sets being defeated by Vlad Stoica by another Brazilian, Jose Pereira, score 0-6, 1- 6, on land 5. In the first match of the day on field 2, Călin Manda abandoned in set 2 in front of the Belgian Joris De Loore, at the score of 4-6, 0-2. Călin had to retire due to a hand medical problem.
Nicolae Frunză qualified on the main board at the Concord Iași Open , after he defeated with a categorical 6-0, 6-1 the Ukrainian Oleg Prihodko, in the 2nd round of qualifications. Nicolae Frunză thus becomes the fifth Romanian sure of his presence on the main picture, after Marius Copil, Filip Cristian Jianu, Nicholas David Ionel and Cezar Creţu.
After Nicolae Frunză, Ștefan Paloși became the second Romanian player to access the main singles table, from qualifications. Stefan defeated the Russian Andrey Chepelev in two extremely contested sets, score 7-6 (4), 6-3 and obtained the ticket for the main table.
Moldovan Ilya Snitari also appeared on the main table, after 7-5, 6-2 with the Czech David Poljak.
Monday, the first with matches on the main table, ended with a huge victory obtained by Nicholas David Ionel in front of the Croatian Borna Coric, managing to qualify in round 2.
Beneficiary of a wild card, David Ionel, 19, 311st ATP, defeated the experienced Croatian Borna Coric, 25, world number 189, 12th place ATP, in two sets, 6-4, 6 -2, in a match that lasted an hour and a half. In the first set it went head to head until 3-3, when David managed a break that proved to be decisive, our player winning 6-4, after 45 minutes.
In the second set, David missed two break points at 1-1, but eventually managed to win Coric's serve at 2-2. From this moment, David Ionel's game was more and more accurate, the Croatian risked and made more mistakes, and our representative got another break and won deservedly, 6-2, managing to close the match with an ace. . Nicholas David Ionel thus obtains one of the most important victories of his career and will meet in round 2 the winner of the match between the Frenchman Geoffrey Blancaneaux (favorite no. 5) and the Romanian Filip Cristian Jianu.

Seven Romanian players in Tuesday's program at Concord Iași Open
On Tuesday, July 12, there will be a real marathon at the Concord Iași Open, on the third day of the competition being scheduled no less than 15 matches on the three fields.
Filip Cristian Jianu, Cezar Cretu and Marius Copil will play their first matches, in round 1. Jianu (310 ATP) will meet the fifth favorite, the Frenchman Geoffrey Blancaneaux (166 ATP), Cezar Cretu from Iasi (428 ATP) will play with the German Louis Wessels (267 ATP), and Marius Copil (330 ATP) will meet the Ukrainian Oleg Prihodko (351). Also, Nicolae Frunză and Ștefan Paloși, coming from qualifications, will also debut on the main board, and David Ionel and Alexandru Jecan will play doubles.
